Living in the Past

Hi Everybody~~ First a plug, if I may. Actually I suppose my whole blog is a personal plug, but whatever... Anyway, I am pleased and honored to announce my membership in Teza's innovative Renegade Gardeners' Forum. If you're perplexed as to just exactly what I'm rambling about, it's basically a bunch of us diehard gardeners who eat, drink, shop, sleep, and breathe our craft. The forum will be shop-talk in the form of opinions and personal anecdotes on all things gardening. Fun, don't you think? For more information, click on my [personally designed, thank you very much] sidebar icon. I hope you'll be entertained and feel free to offer your two bits.

Lupine 'Gallery Red' and Monarda didyma 'Grand Parade.'
I hope you'll pardon my unconventional proclivities. [By now you're aware that I possess a lot of those.] Yes, it's December, a time to celebrate winter's spartan beauty, that is, if you like winter's spartan beauty. Okay, I do, I admit. But I like summer's billowy beauty more.
Phlox paniculata 'Eva Cullum' and Achillea millefolium 'Royal Tapestry.'

Muhlenbergia capillaries "Pink Muhly Grass"

One of my favorite photos from last summer. Phormium tenax 'Evening Glow' among the throng

The variegated foliage of Phlox paniculata 'Norah Leigh' beside Coreopsis rosea 'Heaven's Gate'
with a miss-labeled, [thus mystery] Clematis.
One of the pathway junctions, summer 2008. Notice the now-removed playhouse
on the far left.
Teucrium hycranicum 'Purple Trails' among the admittedly way too crowded groupings.

On the left, Hosta 'Great Expectations' beside Nasturtium and Coleus foliage.
Hanging above is 'Tom West' Fuchsia.
I'm thinking about unearthing photos of last winter's record snowfall, taken by my daughters--the genuine talent in the family. Thank you all for the sweetest, funniest and most entertaining replies. You guys rock!

Hello Grace,

Well, I for one am glad you posted some summer flowers. I do like the starkness of winter, but it can get a little tiring. I have never seen scarlet lupine before...it is stunning!

When I lived in California, I had to climb a mountain to enjoy snow. It was fun! We don't have snow in Malaysia.

Lovely to see all the red & violet coloured flowers in bunches.

Love those fushsia. Are they left there for the winter?

Beautiful as usual Grace. I just keep strolling down your garden paths, admiring the 'way too crowded groupings!'

Grace girl , every time I see pictures from your garden I am inspired to plant MORE and MORE !
My biggest wish for my garden is NOT to have neighbors so close they are sitting in my lap practically (aarrgghhh !) .. so I really have to get serious about planting to block that huge irritation away as far as possible !
What can I say about your passion for pink ? other than I absolutely love it too : )
I will be looking for that achillea Royal Tapestry among others ;-)
I always have something in mind after looking at your pictures .. sparks fly ? LOL
Thanks !
Joy : )

Ah, the lushness of summer is a soothing sight about now, Grace, thanks! I am in love with the Teucrium and must search for it. Too crowded? Is that an oxymoron when speaking of gardens? :-)

Grace,
I can't recall if you have hellebores or not? Anyway the deck job I'm starting tomorrow has Helleborus foetidus nearly in bloom.

So many beautiful pink flowers! I love that blue Clematis too.

I agree -- winter is beautiful, even without snow cover, but...

Grace what a beautiful and "hot" post. ;) I generally don't spend time on wishing for spring, but after the frigid cold we've had the last several days and seeing your gorgeous plants, (sigh), I think I'm ready. lol

Grace:
I have to agree that yours is a garden that amazes during the summer. I have always wanted to grow Muhlenbergia but think we are far too cold - even with Zonal Denial. Come see me later today and I will show you what I awoke to this morning.....

Hmmm... that sounds like fun. I'm not familiar with the Renegade Gardeners. I'll have to check it out.

I absolutely love your photos. We're growing a few of the same things! Lupines, Yarrow, Phlox and Monarda. Have you ever tried the Peppermint Phlox? I've had good luck with it -- very striking hot pink with white stripes. :)

On yet another rainy night I enjoyed the warming look back to summer and most taken with the phlox/achillea combination. Thanks Grace:)

Thank you so much for posting these pictures! I've just come in from looking at my frozen dead yard. I had high hopes for at least a few flowers to still be blooming before this freeze. I like living in the past, especially when it was warm and full of flowers.

Grace ... Wow! Wow! I am blown away by the beauty of your gardens... your photos are fabulous! I have been looking out on a white landscape all day and then your garden appears. What a treat for the eyes and soul. Lush and Magical. Every photo right out of a spectacular garden book. I do not think I can look at another garden today now. Thank you so for posting these. Thank you too for the tip and encouragement for the Fine Gardening contest. Carol

Gorgeous pictures(do you ever take bad ones).
I am a bit envious of your lovely icon, Teza has one, and I believe Alice does as well. I will have to go check out Joy and Anna and see if they are way ahead of me as well. lol

You are definitely a girl after my own heart Grace ~ I love all the pink. It's my favorite. I am one who also prefers summers beauty over winters starkness. I guess I never learned to appreciate the latter? Other than a little break, and to make us appreciate spring more, I could absolutely skip it. and white Christmases are absolutely over-rated... :-)
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the lushness of your garden. I have one of those rose pillars on my Christmas list. I'm thinking I'll have to buy it for myself come spring tho. The clematis you have climbing it is beautiful. It reminds me of 'Integrefolia' which I have in my garden??
Congrats on your new venture. I'm sure you'll do great at it.

Grace,
I am really looking forward to your Renegade Gardeners' posts. And, I am jealous of your pink muhly grass... too cold for it here in Vermont. Looking out at the snowy landscape, I would love meandering along your garden path. :)

I feel like I just walked through a summer wonderland. The heck with winter wonderland. Amazing how homesick for flowers I have just become. Thanks for the treat!

Very beautiful, Grace! I wonder what you'd do with my zone 5 plot of wide open space. I keep thinking first and foremost, I need to enclose it in something as a windbreak. I love the lushness of your gardens!

Beautiful photos of your Beautiful gardens!! I'm thinking I didn't enjoy myself very much this past summer... too much time spent in "busyness!" Happy Weekend! :-)

Hi Grace! Your photos from the past are a nice relief from the snow for me. Your combinations are so beautiful! I love your mystery clematis and the lupines. I planted some lupines last summer. I hope they grow and bloom next year.

Thanks for your comment on my blog. Heidi was excited to be out in the yard when I took photos for the new header. I hope to get a different one when the snow melts.

This is my first visit to your site and I am so glad I did! I'm not quite sure what to say, but beautiful!

You will have to look up old pictures of the snow, as it appears that the snow missed us this time (sniff, sniff). In my opinion, there's no point to winter if we don't get snow. So yes, let's celebrate summer!
