One of the perks of plant-hoarding is the opportunity to play around, [code for "butcher"] certain plants. Plants that you won't cry [too dramatically] over losing. Plants purchased [rescued] on sale, like the Cotoneaster horizontalis and Erica vagans. Or plants from seedlings like these Japanese Maples. My fussed-over babies are a long way from blue-ribbon status, hence my appointed moniker, Quasi-Bonsai. This leaves room for improvements, like say in twenty years when I can drop the "Quasi."

Grace,
That red maple in the blue pot is really really nice. I'd be very happy to have one so nice.
Good for you Grace, I don't think I have the patience for Bonsai.
I so prefer Grace to butcher... and from what I can see all of your case studies seem happy and healthy! I think when you have a container garden, it becomes more pressing to ensure that each specimen speaks out.... like when you get a new hairstyle... that's it, you're a stylist Grace!
Grace,
These "bonsai" look pretty happy with what you did to them. I may have to try one these. Brilliant!
Thanks
Rosey
I like them all. Quasi Bonsai it is...... And I think they will love you for it~
This is an area I have not ventured into, like growing orchids...
I love the Japanese Maple with the rosy pink leaves and the Cotoneaster. They look beautiful potted as bonsai trees.
I love your little bonsais! I've wondered if it was worth trying to grow one of the little Japanese Maple seedlings I've seen. Next time I find one I'm going to try my own Quasi-Bonsai.
Grace - Your bonsai look great. I'm inspired to try one myself, maybe in the Spring. I love that little maple in the 2nd photo - the colours and shape are wonderful.
I love all of them, Grace...no matter how you butcher and chop...they're perfect! I know nothing about bonsai. Hmm, always something to learn, isn't there!?
Wonderful! I didn't know this side of you, Grace. I love all of them. This summer, I kept one of the cedar seedlings, put it in the shallow pot and watch what it'll do. I am curious how old are your plants?
Adorable! I love them, I think they have extra personality!
THose are beautiful. Quasi or otherwise, they look like somebody loves them.
These are wonderful containers!
It looks like you are enjoying your Autumn. Your images are amazing on here as always.
Happy Friday to you!
I'm impressed Grace - what a great idea! This is such a creative way to showcase your seedlings. Kudos!
Oh, I love your Quasi-Bonsai. My hubby and I were talking about getting a bonsai but they are expensive. After seeing what you've done I now have a plan.
I saw your blog title on another blog and just thought I would pop over for a visit.
That blue pot is a perfect container for the acer Grace. Here I have a monster cotoneaster horizontalis which needs some drastic pruning. I keep pulling seedlings up but now you have given me food for thought. I like the windswept look :)
I've always admired bonsai but never tried one. I never thought to take plants I'm getting rid of and trying it out!
